The History of the Monastery of Selby is an edition of the anonymous monk's Historia Selebiensis Monasterii, which narrates the foundation in 1069 and history of the monastery of Selby from its foundation to 1174, when the Historia was completed. The edition by Janet Burton, which presents the Latin text with a facing-page English translation, is the first critical edition of the Historia Selebiensis Monasterii. The Historia includes two sections: first, the narrative of the monastery's history, including the saintly visions which inspired Benedict, the monastery's foundation, and the institution's history under its successive abbots to c.1135; second, the monastery's recent institutional history and a collection of miracle stories. …
