This new edition of the chivalric romance Palmeirim of England, by the Portuguese author Francisco de Moraes, provides, in addition to the narrative text, a wealth of information that helps the non-specialist understand its appeal to a wide readership. The work begins with 'The Cycle of the Palmeirins', presenting the historiography and chronology of the Arthurian cycles. The next section, 'Biographical Information', provides a biography of the author, a prolific writer of letters, dialogues, informative records, other narrative texts, and poetry, in addition to chivalric romances. There follows an extensive and thorough discussion of the question of pretension to historical veracity, a peculiarity of chivalric romance, characterized as 'fictional or lying narrative, without historical guarantee, legendary' (p. 23). After examining this question of truth-claims, and the utility of these 'feigned' pieces, the principles of the current edition are explained, along with a selective bibliography. …
