These pedagogic guides, created by singer, composer, and teacher Steffan Wolf, are small lieder settings of texts by German poet Heinrich Heine, offering a unique approach to vocal and artistic training. Inspired by Nicola Vaccai's (1790-1848) famous Metodo pratico di canto italiano book of vocalises, Wolf s collection rests on the use of language text to teach vocal concepts; "the German language, owing to its wealth of consonants and vowels colors, allows a sheer inexhaustible onomatopoeic breadth of variations and sound nuances...," states Wolf in the pedagogic comments section. Each song marks a gradation in a particular pedagogic concept. The first ten songs address the concept of intervals, and the remaining songs cover a variety of subjects, including suspensions or appoggiaturas, turns, roulades, long tones, recitative, and even "voices" of different people, that is, the artistically nuanced task of representing different characters in a song. …
