The Three Christs of Ypsilanti

Article excerpt

Heavenly Father, you never

let me do anything.

Confession: I know

that touching

the brim of my hat

is not tipping it, is not lifting

it from my head, is not bowing,

is not taking a knee, is not

supplication, is not self-

sacrifice. It could not be

more obvious

that the bad is mine.

I have measured out my life

in sentimental t-shirts

and whale fall

and all

sorts of things

you can't see

or hear

without oxygen

brightener

or a miracle

ear.

I'll sooner believe

to be something more

than something more

is pretending

to be a man.

that every bridge

is also a border,

that war

is an answer,

so let's try it.

Pardon my impertinence,

but is that star

getting bigger?

*

Ready to hand

is a hammer,

a book.

The hand of God

looks a lot like Joe

Louis's battering ram

and, like it, hovers

over downtown,

sure to touch the ground

someday, when

all is ruin, but not yet. …
