ANUARY IS AN EXCITING TIME of year at my university. Faculty are anticipating students' arrival back on campus and planning for spring classes, of course. It's also when we hold our annual Faculty Leadership Institute. Each year, we select a small number of faculty from a pool of applicants to participate in this faculty development experience.

Our faculty leadership experience is designed to focus on skills. As faculty members advance in their academic careers, they need new skills and strategies for managing and leading complex academic initiatives. At my own institution, the Faculty Leadership Institute provides prospective academic leaders with the resources and support they need to guide the institution through change and ensure continued excellence.

While the program at my institution focuses on faculty members at the Associate Professor level or above who have responsibility for program coordination, curriculum development, university-wide committee leadership, or aspire to such academic roles, leadership programming and initiatives differ from institution to institution. Each considers the values, goals, and objectives of the institution while also providing resources, skills, and tools for faculty success and, in some cases, advancement.

As higher education faces new challenges, faculty leadership development will become increasingly critical. This special section of the Journal of Faculty Development is timely and the response to the call for proposals overwhelming. Academic institutions of varying sizes and contexts have shaped impressive and meaningful faculty leadership programming to fit their goals and needs. …
