This is a biography of Roy A.K. Heath (1926-2008). It covers his youth in British Guiana (back then a British colony, and now independent and renamed as Guyana) and then in the United Kingdom, where he worked as a teacher and writer, while keeping his lawyer-degree on the shelf. He published nine novels, all about the culture of modern Guyana. According to the cover: "This is the first critical study on Heath's entire body of work." The author of this biography, Ameena Gafoor, founded and edits the comparative literature, scholarly Arts Journal. Most of the biography is based on the lives of the fictional characters Heath created. For example: "Kwaku's relationship with a hopelessly corrupt government functionary, the ironically named Minister of Hope, captures a sense of the underlying perversity of the social world Heath engages" (182). …
