In October it will be three years since our lovely house was opened to the public, who continue to discover and enjoy it. The current exhibition of Elizabeth Gaskell's life and work also shows a selection of the American editions of her work, donated by Walter E. Smith, and other copies of her books from our collection. A signed copy of the first edition of Cranford, belonging to the Society, will soon be on show. Our established activities reflect both the quality and importance of Elizabeth Gaskell, her family and their wide-ranging network of friends.

In 2018 our Heritage Lottery Fund's grant ends. We are concentrating on diversifying our activities while at the same time maintaining the essential spirit of the house. The coach house has been restored with a generous grant from the Bowland Trust. This will be a centre for working with young students, and the two restored rooms are available for our use when not needed for this project. …
