The 846 Codices Palatini germanici in Heidelberg University Library form a major part of the learned and bibliophile manuscript collection assembled by the Electors of the Palatinate in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, augmented by that of the Augsburg merchant Ulrich Fugger (deceased 1584). The Palatine library remained in Heidelberg until the Thirty Years War when, in 1622/3, it was impounded and transported to Rome, whence only these, the German vernacular manuscripts, were returned in 1816.
