Making a Difference in DKG and Beyond

A colleague often said, "Bread cast upon the water comes back a ham sandwich-every time!" That is what key women educators do: "cast bread." And their ham sandwiches return in the form of motivated, inspired students, ready readers and problem solvers, eyes that light up with new learning, and students who become lifelong friends.

Sometimes the ham sandwiches return with a need for more attention: broken feelings, damaged lives, physical and emotional distress, lost books, and untied shoes. And because some of the "bread" returns as imperfect "sandwiches," key educators continue to do their best to empower and lift ALL their charges to a better station.

Educators make a difference. They shape futures. I am pleasantly surprised occasionally by the greeting of a former student who tells me something I said or did that gave courage or hope or direction. I usually do not remember the incident when the now-adult tells me, and, of course, the moments I think I made a difference are not the ones the student remembers. …
