We have settled into quiet wait

on our backyard, fold-up chairs

to sit inside the fall of hours-

to read the biography of the sky

and vicariously join the fall of light.

While blue above lingers undisturbed,

the moment begins to disappoint

as a literature uninformed of passion.

Yet, abruptly, instincts alert us to reread the sky,

and we slowly discern the blue realm's yield

to orange-red beauty above us

in an awe-inspiring evolution of colors and tints.

Beneath the canopy,

the microcosm of our own emotions

feels led by the sky,

and we seem to fall under its spell.

Dreams feel allowed once more to live in reality

with happiness welcomed

until...

the orange-red canopy begins to lessen in its existence,

ultimately fading into a debility of pink,

then into an unwelcome sharing with streaks of gray,

and finally into only ominous gray. …
