The first night in Byron's dorm room our

amazed exuberance was audible to the

boy with whom he shared a phone box.

Maybe his neighbor's reaction (Lysol on

the swivel phone) was purely hygienic.

Maybe Lysol was the closest cleanser he

had to mace. It was 1983 and facing this

guy in the shower was a feat of everyday

activism my harpsichordist didn't care

o embrace. While we strategized, an

irate mob of crickets stridulated outside

the low (as though made to facilitate

cricket invasions) windows. We thought it

best to make like germs and let the spray

efface us. This is how his bosom pal

Judy came to lend us her bedroom for

a month. She slept on the sofa, got up

early to make breakfast for three with a

glee I never understood. …
