What an exciting time to be in government financial management! We are all adding new words to our every day vocabulary. Robotic process automation, blockchain, distributed ledger technology, agile development and project management, data visualization, and data science are terms that we are hearing in training events, television advertisements, and in technical journals.

Who would have thought just five years ago that we would be exploring robotic process automation to enhance some of the tedious, sometimes manual processing of agency payments and using agile development and project management for enhancement or replacement of information systems? Across all levels of government, the financial management community is innovating, piloting, and experimenting with these technologies. Some of these pilots will fail, but that's ok if the organization learns from the failure. If you are asking yourself 'what's wrong with our current way of doing business?' then we need to remember what Henry Ford said many decades ago - "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got".

Government budgets are getting tighter every year, yet the workload is not being reduced accordingly. Approximately 20-30% of the government workforce is eligible to retire TODAY. That means that many financial operations could be crippled if these professionals decided to call it quits and leave their current positions. …
