Today is Mountain Day,

when all the students and teachers

head to Monadnock,

fleeing the narrow corridor of right answers,

the worn path to college,

and wander in a maze of autumn colors.

"What will we do there?" the students ask.

"I have no idea," I respond.

They burst from buses,

running and laughing,

scattering on trails

that lead to the summit-

the White Dot, Red Spot, Lost Farm,

White Arrow, Surprise, Cliff Walk.

A few settle at the base,

tossing a Frisbee or football.

Some race to the top

and down again

to repeat their running ascent.

Most move at a less sweaty pace,

reaching the peak at different times

and from different directions,

passing others content with lower destinations

who sit silently,

maybe just above the tree line,

eat an apple and watch the sun

wander among the clouds

to stipple distant lakes, fields and farms

visible in the red, yellow, orange jumble below. …
