A stray puppy, Vera was found by the members of the U.S. Coast Guard who were stationed at the Coast Guard Base Alameda (also known as Coast Guard Island) in the San F rancisco Bay in Alameda, California. The men hid Vera in their barracks because dogs were not allowed on Coast Guard Island. Over time, Vera learned the daily duties of the base, including training for and practice in rescuing people from sinking boats on the bay. When she was discovered by the commanding officer, however, Vera had to prove her worth. So, the men set her in the treacherous ocean with a rope to rescue distressed sailors, just as she had done during daily practice drills. Vera became the official mascot of the island thanks to her heroic efforts. …
