We were grieved at the beginning of 2017 by the sad news of the death of Janet Cunliffe-Jones. Janet had been a member of the Gaskell Society and the South West Committee for many years.

On 25 February, a seminar was held to discuss Cousin Phillis, and it was well attended. The Committee met on 18 March to discuss the future of the branch. It was agreed that the purpose was to attract more members, to widen the scope of the lectures, which would include examining Gaskell in the context of other Victorian authors, and to examine aspects of Victorian life described in such literature. Our meetings are held in central Bath, in Bath Royal Scientific and Literary Society headquarters in Queen's Square. Our events are publicised in their weekly newsletter and by the display of a poster for each event at their entrance. The Committee felt that this was an important aid to attracting new members. We drew up a questionnaire to be circulated to members, asking for their views. Several replies welcomed the proposals and made useful comments. …
