Allen Say's imagined, illustrated story of artist James Castle's life offers a visual exploration of what it might mean to be deaf, mute, autistic, and artistic. Through the voice of Castle's nephew, Say traces the artist's life from infancy to recognition by the art world. Keeping Castle's artistic abilities at the forefront, Say explores how he was treated by family and community members. Ridiculed, teased, and deprived of his art materials, Castle continued to make sense of his world through his art, scrounging for paper and rendering images in spit and charcoal.
