HAMPTON UNIVERSITY: Minority Nurses Making a Difference in Nursing Education and Health Disparities Research

It is a privilege to have this opportunity to be a guest editor for The Association of Black Nursing Faculty (ABNF) Journal. This ABNF Journal issue is an opportunity to highlight the research of minority nursing faculty and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduates of Hampton University School of Nursing (HÚSON), a historic HBCU. HÚSON is well-known for educating and preparing successful nurse educators, researchers, and clinicians on all levels of nursing education BSN, MSN, and Ph.D.

HÚSON nurses play an integral role in addressing health disparities and nursing education issues. Dr. Bertha Lane Davis is an exemplar, a role model and has a profound legacy for educating and mentoring nurses. This journal issue is a salute to Dr. Davis and yet another illustration of her dedication, her commitment as a mentor, and her support of nurse educators and researchers.

Also, this collaborative effort is a demonstration of ongoing mentor-mentee relationships in research and scholarship. Topics are diverse and includes research of faculty from Historically Black Colleges/ Universities (HBCUs), and other academic institutions of higher learning. Each researcher has a passion to make significant contributions toward reducing patient health disparities and improving educational outcomes of nursing students.

Dr. Alice Howard, Dr. Phyllis D. Morgan (HÚSON PhD graduate), community physicians, and other Prince William County community leaders present the implementation of a community/faith-based prostate education program for black men. …
