Dear Members and Friends,

It is an honor to be writing my first column for The Hymn. This journal has for many decades provided a forum for scholars to deepen our understanding of congregational song, to explore the stories of what and how various groups of people have sung together, and to consider the future of this important dimension of our community life. We are fortunate to have the leadership of editor Robin Knowles Wallace and the contributions of the Editorial Advisory Board members as they keep this journal timely in its focus and rigorous in its scholarship.

I am likewise honored to have begun my work as Executive Director of The Hymn Society. This organization counts among its members and leaders so many people to whom I have looked for inspiration, guidance, support, and resources. I have valued The Hymn Society's Annual Conferences for the rich scholarship, friendly welcome, collegial spirit, ecumenical reach, cultural and musical diversity, and above all, lively and inspired singing together. After one conference a few years back, I was so moved by the experience of this "tribe" that I returned home and signed up to become a life member of The Hymn Society, a decision that I have never regretted.
