Dear Members and Friends,

Just yesterday I was greeted by the first blooms of spring. Suddenly there were daffodils in front of our church announcing boldly that other flowers will soon follow and that new life is now springing forth in the northern hemisphere.

As I write this column, we are in just the second full week of Lent. Each day during this season I am hearing readings from Scripture that call us to conform ourselves and our world to God's ways and God's justice. When I flip on the news and hear of conflict, injustice, and human misery, I realize how important the biblical message is. Just this morning the headlines made me aware of mass shootings, civil wars, injustices against immigrants, and exclusion of transgender persons.

"We believe that the holy act of singing together shapes faith, heals brokenness, transforms lives, and renews peace."

The statement above, which expresses the vision of The Hymn Society, reminds us that in the midst of injustice, racism, and conflict, God's Spirit sings through us and works through us to bring about change. As winter gives way to spring and as Lent gives way to Easter, God brings light from darkness and life from death. …
