The Executive Committee (EC) of The Hymn Society (THS) held its annual fall meeting at the Cenacle Retreat and Conference Center in Chicago from October 24 to 26, 2018. Members of the staff joined with the EC for most sessions in reflecting on the mission and work of the Society and in offering input to assist the EC in its decision-making role. President Marilyn Haskel will offer a more detailed report and some deeper reflections in a future issue, but what follows are some highlights of the meeting.

The EC heard reports from Executive Director Mike McMahon on transitions that have taken place during 2018, including the move of THS offices from Kansas City to Washington DC; full staffing of the THS office with a new executive director and administrative assistant; new websites that will soon be launched for both The Hymn Society and The Center for Congregational Song; a new database for management of membership and donations; and a new accounting system. The EC also heard from Brian Hehn about The Center for Congregational Song's first-year launch programs and other initiatives, including web-based resources, a blog by young members, a podcast series hosted by President-Elect Benjamin Brody, and collaborations with other groups concerned with congregational song.

The EC voted to simplify the membership structure, with just one price for individual members regardless of their country, enacting a modest increase for US members and a reduction for non-US members to achieve that parity. …
