Research Director's Report

Article excerpt

In 2018, The Hymn Society Annual Conference is headed to St. Louis, a socio-cultural landscape rich with history. Being a transplanted resident in Canada and a cultural history buff, I am fascinated by the socio-cultural context of where we will be this July. One wonders what are the songs of the Native Americans who resided there long before others came to their land. Also, what were the songs of the first white settlers? How did the socio-economic setting of their time and their cultural background influence their songs and what might we learn from them in our present age? Being a researcherteacher, these are rich "rabbit holes" that I would love to explore. Perhaps you might have the same inclination. If so, I encourage you to participate in the Emerging Scholars' Forum that will be featured at the conference. Do your investigation, write it up as a research paper and share your findings.
