Most of the hymns in this collection were written between 2012 and 2015. There are also five previously published hymns set to newly composed tunes. John Carter's new tune, First English Columbus, (5.4.5.5.7) composed for Wren's "We are your people," gives a lift to this timeless text. Many of the texts that follow regular meters are matched with established tunes. Wren's penchant for uncommon meters is matched by the skill of several contemporary tune writers. Daniel Charles Damon is particularly well-represented with nine melodies. Each hymn is printed twice, first in poetic form, and then interlined with music. The texts suggest that they were composed for particular occasions. (It would have been wonderful to have some of Wren's "exegetical" commentary included in the collection.)

Overall, the texts express a modern, progressive theology. Many relate to pressing issues of the day such as racism, sexism, and xenophobia. …
