When Allan S. Haley studied music at Harvard in the 1960s, his professor, Elliot Forbes, directed him to the so-called Wielhorsky sketchbook in Moscow for his undergraduate honors thesis project. He learned Russian in order to read the notes by a Russian Beethoven scholar, Nathan L. Fishman, whose three-volume edition of the sketchbook was published in 1962 (.Kniga ėskizov Betxovena za 1802-1803gody [Moscow: Gcsudarstvennoj Muzykaľnoj Izdatel'stvo]). Thus began Haley's long fascination with the genesis of Beethovens Eroica symphony and its roots in the Prometheus myth. As Haley directed his career to law and winemaking, he waited in vain for other scholars to pursue this theme and publish an English edition of Fishmans notes on the sketchbook. …
