Is the Onslaught of T20 Cricket Influencing How Test Cricket Is Played? – A Formative Assessment

Article excerpt

With an active International Cricket Council (ICC) at the helm, the game of cricket has been seeing a lot of changes and upgrades in playing rules and formats which any other sport can hardly match. Currently, there are 12 full members and 94 associate members of ICC (ICC Development, 2018). The number of cricket followers has long surpassed the billion mark (Kadapa, 2013). While the oldest and longest format of the game, i.e., Test cricket, has been played since 1877, the 50 overs One Day International (ODI) format has been in existence since 1971; the smallest and youngest format, i.e., Twenty Overs International (T20I), started only in 2005 but gained instant popularity. This is further accentuated by the introduction of Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 which was into its 11th edition in 2018. Even a 10-over format (T10 league) got ICC's approval in 2018 (Bose, 2018).

With decrease in the number of overs, the game has created a more level playing field, thus becoming more competitive and unpredictable in nature. This, in turn, has provided lots of entertainment and excitement to its viewers seeking much less amount of their time commitment. More viewership has led to lucrative media rights and sponsorships, which led to salary explosion for players and a flourishing industry around the game. The lure of big money made cricketers, including the budding ones, embrace this format. Even established cricketers are retiring from Tests to lengthen their T20 career. If the trend continues, 5-over games may not be a distant option, with Test cricket losing its relevance. The base version of no other sport had been challenged as much as cricket's (i.e., Test matches), even though many other sports have now started franchise-based customized league. A number of articles and works of cricket's stalwarts and administrators have been published in the media on the topic, but there is relatively less systematic research on the same.

Against this backdrop, the present study aims at estimating how the shortest version (i.e., T20) of the game has influenced the longest version of the game (i.e., Test) keeping India's performance in focus.

Literature Review

There is a serious dearth of existing literature on the chosen subject for this study. There have been some works on measuring and predicting cricketer's and team's performance.

What Is More Important on T20 Outcome - Batting or Bowling?

Generally, the parameters used to rate a player's performance are highest score, average, strike rate, number of 4s and number of 6s for a batsman and number of wickets, economy rate, bowling average and bowling strike rate for a bowler. The variance explained by batting is much higher than the variance explained by bowling, which explains the higher importance of batting as compared to bowling in T20 cricket (Sharma, 2013).

Can We Predict How Much a Batsman Is Going to Score in the Next Match?

Koulis et al. (2104) assessed batting performance via a Poisson-Hidden Markov Model (HMM) where the number of runs scored by a batsman, Xn, for game n = 0, 1, 2, ...., follows a conditional Poisson distribution, with a mean that depends on the underlying batting performance Yn. The latent process {Yn} follows a homogeneous first-order discrete-time Markov chain with transition matrix P and an initial distribution, which they take to be the steady-state distribution.

How Do We Measure the Impact Score of a Cricketer's Performance?

Davis et al. (2015) proposed a metric called "expected run differential" that measures the additional runs that a player is expected to contribute to his team when the player is compared to a standard player-players belonging to the same positional cohort. They extended the same to bowlers and all-rounders.

What Are the Parameters That Influence Cricketer's Price in IPL Auction and How?

Rastogi and Deodhar (2009) studied the parameters that determine pricing of a player in IPL Auction. …
