Feeling Wistful for East Germany's Past. (for the People)

In German, it's called "Ostalgie," a play on the German words for east (Ost) and nostalgia (Nostalgie). What it is, besides being strange, is a looking back with longing and fondness on the very, very red (as in communist) people's republic that ran East Germany for the four decades that came to an end 13 years ago.

Hard to believe that folks recall with love and tenderness a government that for 40 years ran a harsh and relentless tyranny? Consider this: Massine Productions GmbH plans to build a 100,000-square-foot replica of that communist dictatorship in the southeast Berlin district of Koepenick. The East German model is to come with restaurants serving the limited and bland food for which the country was famous, East German marks for money and vigorous customs inspections of everyone by mean-tempered border guards.

Sounds like fun, doesn't it? "The aim isn't to make a big joke out of East Germany," Massine Productions spokeswoman Susanne Reich told a reporter from Reuters. …
