Article excerpt

The 2003-2004 edition of Government Assistance Almanac provides updated information on all 1,499 federal domestic assistance programs. The new edition includes Web-site addresses for all programs and references to legislation authorizing government assistance.

These programs represent nearly $1.5 trillion worth of federal assistance that is available to a wide range of users: senior citizens, civic and organizational leaders, parents and students, veterans, and other individuals. Also covered are programs for state and local governments, businesses, and other organizations.

In its 17th annual edition, the Government Assistance Almanac for 2003-2004 (1,000 pages/$235) comprises every program described in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA). It condenses the information contained in the federal catalog's more than 2,500 pages to the essentials needed by those seeking federal assistance.

The 130-page Master Index has an average of ii index entries for each program. For ease of use, programs offering financial assistance are italicized. The Agency Index lists federal administrative units and subunits. While incorporated into the Master Index, this index helps to speed user searches specifically seeking administrative entities.

Summary tables give four-year comparisons of federal assistance by agency, department, and administrative unit, with details on the 50 largest and 50 smallest programs for the subject year. A section entitled "Field Office Contacts" gives addresses and telephone numbers for more than 3,000 field offices.
