To help older patients find out if they are eligible for prescription drug assistance, consider referring them to www.benefitscheckuprx.com.

This free service, developed by the National Council on the Aging, allows seniors or caregivers to fill out a short questionnaire, then lists drug discount card programs and government plans for which they are eligible. The program is also supported by the AARP, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, America Online, and other organizations, and is endorsed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

"It potentially can be outstanding," said Dr. James C. Martin, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. "To have a way, in an organized fashion, that people can determine their eligibility for these medicine programs is certainly more than you can get out of a physician's office at this time."

The Web site prompts the patient or the caregiver to enter the following information:

* Date of birth for patient and spouse.

* State of residence and Zip code. …
