It has been a pretty bad year.

Wall Street has fallen out of love with corporate e-iearning. All of those leadership flame-outs have thrown doubt on decades of leadership development. And there is the moribund economy...fear of terrorism...the war.

In times like these, where do you look for bright spots? Where are the signs of life in a beleaguered economy? Who still has passion and energy for their work?

Those were some of the questions we asked as we began to hunt for this year's New Guard--members of the profession who are taking themselves and the field in new directions. And we were happily surprised. In this year's finalists, we tapped into a vein of human spirit that reminds us why this profession stays strong.

This month, let other magazines nag you about the bottom line. We've done our share of that. In this issue, we want to still the wagging forefinger for just a moment to focus on some people who are making a human contribution to the profession, while also making their numbers. …
