In 2000, Emap launched a multimedia advertising sales operation with the promise to deliver creative cross-media solutions. By its own admission, the first year was rocky and mistakes were made. But in year two, customers began to feel the benefits of a new way of linking media.

A culture based on the principles and values of virtual teamwork, collaboration and flexibility was developed.

An insight team was set up to conduct research into, and seminars on, key audiences and Emap's media. The new role of head of people and culture was created, with a brief to align internal culture with the external positioning of the business. And 36 senior managers were sent on leadership programmes to champion cultural change.

Cross-media solutions revenue grew from a standing start to pounds 12m. The magazine sales team increased its revenue by 6%; online sales revenue rose 90%; radio upped its market share from 17% to 19. …
