Vitamins for Your Skin

Vitamin therapy offers specific benefits to overall skin care, including the treatment of problem areas.

"Whether dark circles under the eyes are a result of aging, genetics or sun damage, vitamin K has been shown to reduce the puffiness and discoloration associated with this oftentimes troubling problem," says dermatologist Leslie Baumann, a professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida.

In a recent study, those who applied a combination cream of vitamin K and retinol to dark areas under their eyes experienced a significant lightening compared to those using an under-eye cream containing sunscreen. Other research shows that vitamin K cream helps reduce bruising following laser treatment for spider veins on the face.

Vitamin C may help improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin, including age spots and the tendency to bruise easily.

"During the natural aging process, the skin thins," advises Indianapolis dermatologist William Hanke. "Easy bruisability is accentuated in people who have had heavy sun exposure.
