American Business Information Acquires Trinet

Last month, American Business Information (ABI) of Omaha, Nebraska acquired the assets of Trinet, Inc., the business information company located in Parsippany, New Jersey. The terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The announcement of the acquisition was made by Vinod Gupta, President of ABI. Gupta stated, "We at ABI could not be more pleased to reach this agreement with the shareholders and employees of Trinet, Inc. The new company, Trinet America, will take full advantage of the substantial database resources of ABI."

Trinet America will continue to be operated as a separate company and will focus its efforts on meeting the needs of the largest users of business marketing information. The firm will be managed by Trinet's co-founder, Dr. Charles W. Stryker, who will assume the role of President of the firm. Since founding the company, Stryker has worked with many leading industrial firms in the development of their marketing programs.

Prior to his association with Trinet, Dr. Stryker was employed by American Telephone and Telegraph Company. He led a group of technical personnel who were responsible for the design, development, implementation, maintenance, and administration of the computer based systems used to support all AT&T sales and marketing functions.

Information Today contacted Dr. Stryker and asked him to fill us in on Trinet's background and its acquisition by ABI. Dr. Stryker told us, "Trinet was formed in January 1984 as a wholly owned company of Control Data Corporation. In September 1986 the company was sold to a group of institutional investors, Welsh, Carson, Anderson, and Stow. This group virtually built the company and Trinet grew from a $4 million company in 1986 to a $20 million company (approximately) in 1990."

As to the ABI acquisition, Dr. Stryker explained that "only one division of Trinet was sold to ABI, the national account division. However, the name |Trinet' was sold and the original company will be changing its name." According to Stryker, ABI and Trinet were both maintaining national databases, so this acquisition is obviously of mutual benefit to both parties. Of course, the Trinet America database will be increased by about three million listings from the ABI database. …
