European veers towards weekend publishing

The European could soon switch to Saturday or Sunday publishing, according to new editor John Bryant.

"I'd be lying if I said we weren't looking at it," says Bryant. "I have to ask if we are ringing the bells by publishing on Friday instead of producing a weekend leisure package."

Bryant also dismisses rumours that the main paper could go tabloid, but hints the second section (currently business) could go tabloid and perhaps change content.

Bryant, who was the surprise replacement for editor Ian Watson two weeks ago, says his task now is to make the paper a "compulsive read". And he adds: "Any paper has to be balanced and accessible, but that's a difficult trick for a pan-European paper; close to impossible in fact."

His remarks came as the European announced its first ABC figure for July to December 1990. The figure of 226,609 scrapes in above the launch guarantee to advertisers by 1000. However, the, continental circulation has proved higher and the UK circulation lower than expected.

Depsite reaching the guarantee the figure falls short of initial launch expectations. …
