CAREERS: Company CV - Argos

Article excerpt

Argos is one of six businesses - along with Home Shopping UK & Ireland, Home Shopping Continental Europe, Jungle.com, Argos Additions and Financial Services - that comprise the Argos Retail Group (ARG), a subsidiary of Great Universal Stores (GUS).

Argos consists of Argos Distributors, the catalogue chain store; Argos Business Solutions, an incentives and promotions business; and Argos Direct, a home-delivery operation.

Argos has more than 523 stores throughout the UK and Ireland, carrying more than 9200 products. It has 86 Superstores, which carry an extended product range, and 19 Call & Collect stores.

Each year the company issues 48 million catalogues. Of these, 36 million are its standard twice-yearly editions and 12 million are 'Additions' catalogues.

In 1979, Argos was acquired by BAT Industries and demerged from the group in 1990. It was bought by GUS in 1998.
