One of the newest products available for information security professionals is the integrated security appliance, a single box that contains a host of functions such as an antivirus solution, an intrusion detection system (IDS), and Internet content filtering. Technology giants such as Symantec, NetScreen, and ISS are among the many companies that offer such multifeatured devices. These products offer convenience and take up significantly less rack space than would the individual components. A survey of 25 senior infosec professionals conducted by market intelligence firm TheInfoPro (TIP) found, however, that while many planned to purchase this type of device within the next year or so, about half said they weren't in the market for these products, either because they couldn't justify replacing their existing systems or because they saw a downside to combining everything in one package--the risk of complete system failure.

Makers of integrated products contend that customers are buying their products in droves--and that single-function products have greater risks. …
