Ad agency BBDO has made swingeing cuts to its workforce this week, but pledges clients will still receive the same level of service. BSB Dorland has also made 12 redundancies and Lowe Howard-Spink too is believed to be making cuts to staffing levels.

BBDO, which merged with Abbott Mead Vickers three weeks ago, is shedding up to 50 staff as the two London offices integrate. Around 30 people will be lost initially, with more as the BBDO office is run down, according to Martin Boase, chairman of Omnicom UK, which holds a 23% stake in the new agency.

Haircare company Alberto-Culver is the first to move business as a result. It will give some of its European media buying to another shop, it says.

Former BBDO chairman and chief executive of Omnicom UK, Peter Jones, insists this is the only account casualty. All "active accounts' teams" are moving across to the newly formed agency and should not suffer, he claims.

BBDO was particularly dependent on its multinational Pepsi, Gillette, Wrigley and Alberto-Culver business. …
