Waterstone's Booksellers is the UK's leading specialist bookseller.

It operates through 193 stores, primarily in the UK, of which 39 are on university campuses.

Waterstone's flagship store on London's Piccadilly is the biggest bookshop in Europe, with specialist sections for fiction, academic genres and children's books.

The first Waterstone's bookshop opened on Old Brompton Road in West London in 1982. Waterstone's introduced a specialist online bookselling site in 1996, and in 2001 formed a strategic alliance with Amazon UK to relaunch its site, powered by Amazon's e-commerce platform.

Waterstone's is part of the HMV Group, which launched on the stock market in 2002. It trades as Waterstone's, Hatchards (in London) and Hodges Figgis (in Dublin).

In November 2002, Waterstone's launched its biggest Christmas advertising campaign to date as it battled against rival book retailers including WH Smith.

The campaign was created by bds beechwood and ran for six weeks on television, with a 20-second spot that built on the Waterstone's brand as well as promoting specific books.

In December, it was reported that Tim Waterstone had approached HMV Group with a pounds 200m offer to buy the company he had founded 20 years before.

But in January, Waterstone's made a statement that it had no intention of selling the company back to him.
