Recognizing that current recessionary trends have in many cases resulted in information center staff and budget cuts, Dialog Information Services, Inc. has instituted a temporary assistance program for information professionals who have recently lost positions.

The Dialog Information Professionals' Career Assistance Program (CAP) is a limited-time special program developed to help information professionals facing career transitions caused by the current recession. CAP is available exclusively to professional online searchers who have been employed in that capacity on a full-time, permanent basis, but who have become unemployed during the past six months.

Richard Ream, vice president for Marketing and Customer Services, in an open letter to information professionals that was included with Dialog's April Chronolog newsletter, commented on the origins and philosophy of the program: "Although it may be short-sighted to reduce information resources in uncertain and challenging times, some companies and institutions are making the unfortunate choice to cut back on information center budgets and sometimes even information center staffing. …
