Big cheeses are Swiss

Senior marketing managers who want to earn the highest salaries in Europe should flee the country. Switzerland pays its managers an average of 55,955 [pounds] per annum compared with 25,605 [pounds] in the UK -- the second from the lowest salary out of ten Western European countries.

Even after tax and social security payments have been deducted and the salaries adjusted for a fair comparison, Switzerland still comes out on top. The Swiss marketing manager's buying power averages 37,126 [pounds] while the British manager is third from lowest with 19,588 [pounds].

These findings come from Remuneration in Europe 1991, compiled by P-E International, the management consultancy. With data based on 42,444 executive packages in 3562 companies, it claims to be the largest ever survey of European salaries.

The report highlights large differences from country to country between marketing managers' income and their buying power. Managers in Denmark start off earning a handsome 36,540 [pounds] but their buying power is a miserly 16,529 [pounds] -- the lowest in Europe. …
