Freeserve is the UK's leading internet service provider (ISP) and is the British subsidiary of the Wanadoo Group.

Wanadoo is Europe's second-biggest ISP, with 8.8 million customers at June 2003. It is number one in France, with 4.2 million active subscribers, number two in Spain, with 1.5 million, and number one in the UK, with 2.6 million. It also offers access services in the Netherlands and Morocco, with 485,000 active customers at June 2003.

Wanadoo's French sales network has more than 3000 points of sale plus 630 France Telecom offices.

In the UK, the sales network is extended by distribution deals with Dixons Group and partners such as Orange, Littlewoods, Texaco, MVC and Lloydspharmacy.

Freeserve was launched by Dixons Group in September 1998. In August 1999, 20% of the company was floated on the London Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, with Dixons continuing to own about 80%. In December 2000, Wanadoo, 70.6% owned by France Telecom, made an offer for Freeserve.

The following spring, Freeserve shares were de-listed from the London and New York stock exchanges, with Freeserve merging into the Wanadoo Group and listing on the Paris Bourse.

In May 2003, Freeserve launched loyalty scheme Freeserve Rewards. The next month, the company redesigned its shopping channel to give more prominence to special offers and the editor's choice of exclusive deals. As part of the initiative, Boots.com offered a goody bag to Freeserve users who bought its products.

In September, Freeserve launched a free advice line, backed by a pounds 12m TV, outdoor, press and online advertising campaign through M&C Saatchi. …
