Book Club turns new leaf

Book Club Associates (BCA), the UK's biggest mail order book club, is gearing up for the introduction of a new corporate identity to exploit the predicted demise of the Net Book Agreement (NBA).

BCA - owner of the Literary Guild and World Books - has been moving into new areas in recent years. It has established clubs, like Music Direct, which sell records, videos and computer programmes by mail. Last year, it set up Quality Paperbacks Direct, the UK's first paperback mail order club.

An end to the NBA, designed to protect small book publishers from the power of chains like WH Smith and Dillons, would allow the BCA to sell books through non-book clubs. Until now activities in this market have been restricted by the NBA.

Marketplace Design Partnership has been enlisted to oversee a new logo and, possibly, a new name for the 100m [pounds] turnover company - to be unveiled in the autumn. …
