Shoppers size up the mid-summer sales

With the mid-summer sales evident in every high street, the question to be asked is whether consumers are able as well as willing to spend and who is out looking to pick up bargain?

The downturn in retail sales has shown no real let up and there is no particular reason to believe that the sales will not be hit to the same extent. However, from research conducted by Mintel for its Retail Intelligence report on Discount Shopping results show consumers are willing to spend when the right products are at the right price.

Almost seven out of ten people buy from the "sales", and although there is no trend data to compare this with the boom years, the relatively high figure is indicative of the desire to save money in the current economic climate. It also reflects that more and more goods are being reduced for clearance in shops and shoppers have come to expect this and wait for the right time to buy. …
