Marketing man of the Manche

Marc Wilson is one of the first of a flourishing breed of Euromarketers.

French by birth, he recently took over responsibility for Europcar's UK marketing and sales activity.

His past has equipped him well for his latest trans-Manche move.

"During national service, I was based in Martinique," he says. "All I did during that time was host diplomats' visits - I was a glorified PR man," he jokes.

Born of an English father, Wilson was not surprised to find himself gravitating towards the UK once he had found his feet in sales.

But his first experience on these shores was short and problematic. "I was working for the French office furniture company Vinco at the time," he says.

"I was over here for 14 months, working all on my own trying to set up a UK operation for the company, but I really didn't achieve very much," he says.

Although he and his wife enjoyed England and their home in Wimbledon, Southwest London, Wilson was quite relieved when head-hunters approached him offering him a place in the marketing department of Europcar in its Paris office. …
