Thousands Flock to Sports Illustrated Tour

Thanks to The Toyota Presents Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary Tour, thousands of Americans have gained a renewed appreciation of the work done by their local park and recreation agencies.

The tour launched in July in Newport, R.I., and will culminate in California next July. Each stop recognizes the achievements that parks and recreation departments have had in their communities. So far, the tour has visited 10 cities, and plans to stop in 10 more by the end of year. A total of 50 cities will be featured by the time Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary year ends in July 2004. On several occasions, the tour visits coincide with the Sportstown USA program, a partnership between NRPA and Sports Illustrated.

The city of Newport received national attention when NBC's "The Today Show" showcased Rhode Island's capital. Throngs of people visited the city, which presented the best of its parks and recreation programs. Among the dozens of local celebrities and government officials who attended, National Basketball Association legend, David Robinson, participated in the three-day event. …
