New York City's Symphony Space-An Interdisciplinary Performing Arts Institution Combining Music

New York City's Symphony Space--an interdisciplinary performing arts institution combining music, dance, theatre and literature--has appointed a new executive director: Cynthia Elliot, who comes to Symphony Space from her arts marketing company Elliot Media Services Inc., will work closely with artistic director Isaiah Sheffer. Elliot spent six years at Sony Classical, where she headed the label's editorial and new media activities.

Also naming a new executive director is the San Francisco--based contemporary arts center Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Kenneth J. Foster succeeded John R. Killacky in the position in October. "Kenneth Foster is a terrific presenter and is respected by the entire national presenting arts community," says Joseph V. Melillo, executive producer at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. For the past nine years, Foster led the international performing arts presenting program UApresents at the University of Arizona as executive director.

Travis Preston, Carol Bixler and Jon Gottlieb have all joined the management structure at Center for a New Theater at CalArts as artistic director, producing director and dean, respectively. In addition to their collaboration on CalArts's site-specific production of King Lear in 2002, the three bring a diverse set of credentials to the theatre. Preston, an international director of theatre and opera, helmed the world premieres of Democracy in America and Terra Nova. Bixler spent four years as the managing director and associate producer of En Garde Arts in New York City, where she helped produce Deborah Warner's The Waste Land. Gottlieb is currently the resident sound designer at the Mark Taper Forum and Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.

After several years under the sole leadership of executive director Gerry McClamy, Karamu Performing Arts Theatre of Cleveland, Ohio, has a new artistic director. …
