The ubiquitous supermarket query, "Paper or plastic?:' has many repercussions. Do you want to be blamed for destroying the forests if you request paper bags, or filling landfills with plastic ones that may not biodegrade for centuries? Sure, you can carry around a net grocery bag as many Europeans do, hardly a practical solution when you're shopping in quantity as most of us prefer, thus avoiding the need for repeatedly driving to the supermarket, which burns fossil fuels, adding to global warming, and so the environmental guilt trip goes on and on.

Eventually, you must make a decision, and let's say you opt for plastic bags, reasoning that at least they can be reused, thereby postponing for as long as possible the landfill problem. The next question is what to do with all those bags that pile up faster than you can reuse them?
