Washington, D.C.: When you've got it, you better work it. And if you archive all of it in a CD format, you don't have to be physically there to present it. The National Endowment for the Arts has produced "Teaching Shakespeare," a spoken-arts CD that features recitations and monologues by James Earl Jones, Michael York, Jane Alexander, Zooey Deschanel, Harold Bloom and Mel Gibson. With Elizabethan lute selections played by Howard Bass and an excerpt of Chieu Xuan's performance from the documentary film A Dream in Hanoi, the CD is part of a teacher resource kit that includes a video, a teacher's guide, a timeline poster and fun facts, all of which can be ordered by visiting www.vpw.com/partner/shakespeare.

Random House Audio has issued the unabridged audio CD version of Suzan-Lori Parks's new novel, Getting Mother's Body ($31.95). In between instrumental interludes, Parks herself relates the entertaining car trip of Billy Beede, a pregnant 16-year-old who is convinced that she must travel from Texas to Arizona and dig up her mother's grave to claim the jewels she is buried with. The five-CD set features a recording of Parks singing the blues songs she composed for the novel, her first foray into fiction.

Smithsonian Folkways Records has finally completed reissuing the eight classic recordings by playwright and critic Eric Bentley with the recent CD release of his acclaimed musical version (with composer Joseph Raposo) of Bertolt Brecht's A Man's a Man. First performed in 1962 by the New Repertory Theatre Company on 42nd Street during the time of the Cuban missile crisis, Bentley's Vietnam-era take was compared with the Living Theatre's production of a different translation, which happened to be playing concurrently. …
