Unfortunately, for corporate America, downsizings have not yet become a thing of the past. And not surprisingly, most companies are making an effort to soften the blow when the ax does fall. Seven out of 10 employers make use of some type of outplacement service for their staff, according to a recent American Management Association Overnite Fax Poll. Fifty-nine percent of the respondents make some use of these services for senior executives; 53 percent for middle managers; 41 percent for supervisors; and 29 percent for hourly workers.

What factors come into play when deciding which employees are offered outplacement counseling?

Thirty-five percent gave the highest consideration to employees' job category or management level; 26 percent said it was employees' length of service. But while the majority of companies provide employees with some type of outplacement services, survey respondents gave a fairly low performance rating to those firms that they used. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 indicating superior performance and 1 indicating very poor performance, the average rating was 3. …
