NISO Conference to Focus on Controversies of the Information Age

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) will focus on "Controversies of the Information Age - Lessons for Standard Makers" as the theme of its 1991 Annual Meeting and Program. The program, which is open to non-members as well as members, convenes at the Harvard Club in Boston later this month.

The conference will address the main themes that bring the once discrete interests of information service providers - including system designers and developers, librarians, and publishers - head to head:

* The Economic Impact of Standards Development: will lack of standardization force us to concede global leadership to other countries?

* Computer Security: What's possible? What's fair?

* Paper Permanence and the Environment: how can we resolve the environmental and economic contradictions entailed in recycling paper?

Speaker who have been chosen because they have hands-on experience working at the leading edge of these issues have been asked to clarify the divergent viewpoints involved and define what standards might be developed which will create a win-win situation, rather than create obstacles. …
