If you're up for a little nostalgia from the Weimar Republic era, this release, designed, perhaps, to be heard over a backdrop of clinking cocktail glasses, should fill the bill. Canadian mezzo Jean Stilwell is rare among classical singers (in the mold of Teresa Stratas and Dawn Upshaw) in being able to slip into the popular genre and make it her own. And she is joined here by an ensemble of violin, accordion, trumpet (often muted, for period effect), piano, bass and percussion, with luscious arrangements by conductor Peter Tiefenbach.

Stilwell is especially convincing in the lighter repertoire, such as the two songs by Friedrich Hollander, one of them designed with the voice and persona of Marlene Dietrich in mind. The German diva sang "Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss" (as "Falling in Love Again") in Josef yon Sternberg's film, The Blue Angel. Another Dietrich film connection comes with Karl Hajos's song, "Give Me the Man," which was heard in yon Sternberg's first American film, Morocco, as an instrumental, to which the "suggestive" lyrics featured here were later added. …
