Ronald L. Buchan, 62, former librarian for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, died November 4. He began his library career in 1960 at Concordia College in Bronxville, New York, and from 1966 to 1974 he was a librarian at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. In 1974 he joined NASA, and in 1979 he became the agency's lexicographer. He retired in 1993. * Warren Horton, 65, director general of the National Library of Australia from 1985 until his retirement in 1999, died November 25. He began his library career in 1957 at the State Library of New South Wales, then served as deputy of the State Library (1975-1981) and state librarian of Victoria (1981-1985). A well-known figure in international librarianship, Horton was treasurer of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) from 1993 until 1997, and in 1997 was awarded the IFLA Gold Medal and in 1999 received an honorary IFLA Fellowship for his work as a "true internationalist." * American Libraries recently learned of the July 25 death of Mary Virginia Hughes, 82, who was a library consultant for the California State Library from 1957 until her retirement in 1983. …
